Hampi, once the last capital of Vijayanagar, was one of the greatest Hindu kingdoms in India’s history. The area has some amazing ruins, intriguingly intermingled with the large boulders that dot the landscape. The ruined empire, which dated back to the 14th century, stretches for over 25 kilometers (10 miles) comprises of more than 500 monuments. One of the most striking monument is the Vittala Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu which is situated amid boulders not too far from the center of town, its main hall has 56 pillars that, when struck, make musical sounds. The Royal Center toward Kamalapura and south of Hampi, where Vijayanagar rulers lived and governed, is another must-see.
